Keep Your Engine Running Right: Check the Timing Belt

As a car owner you have the responsibility of making sure your car engine is receiving the routine maintenance it needs to run smoothly and safely. One part that needs to be checked is the timing belt. Below is a description of what the timing belt does and how often it should be replaced:

  • Timing Belt- The timing belt is responsible for making sure that the crankshaft and the camshaft of an engine are working together with the proper timing. If the timing belt is bad then the engine will not receive the right amount of air and will cause the pistons and valves to make contact causing costly damage to the engine.
  • Replacement- The timing belt should be checked routinely for signs of wear and will usually need to be replaced every four years or 60,000 miles.
