Auto-dimming mirrors employ electricity, chemistry, and physics to reduce distracting glare. If we opened an auto-dimming rearview mirror, you would see a circuit board behind the glass. This board holds a photodiode, which senses light and converts it to a charge. At light speed, that charge travels the circuit to a gel within the mirror's glass. Through an electrochromic reaction, the gel darkens very quickly, and the reflection you see contains less glare.
